Body image is how an individual sees oneself in the mirror. It is a judgement made on the basis of a few combination of characteristics of what is ‘beautiful’ and what a good looking person looks like, which is mostly developed by the society we live in.

Most people have a negative body image. They think there is something wrong with their body, which makes them uncomfortable. These people end up having low self esteem and extremely low confidence level. Some even suffer from psychological distress and serious disorders.
A few steps to encourage positive body image are:
1. Look for a deeper beauty- don’t judge people or yourself based on looks. The person inside is what matters.
2. Imperfection is beautiful- love the flaws you have as they make you unique and one of a kind.
3. Focus on your achievements- take pride in who you are as a person and what you have achieved rather than what you look like on the outer surface.
4. Don’t believe the print or digital media- the things you see in television and magazines are all altered to be perfect and are not naturally real.
5. Eliminate people who show you down- love yourself, you don’t need anyone’s validation to accept who you are.
6. Love the whole you not just the pieces- appreciate and accept how you look as a package rather than obsessing about certain parts.
7. Pamper yourself- take care of your body; exercise regularly, eat respectfully not obsessively, wear comfortable clothes.
8. Make a ‘I am beautiful because’ list- write one thing about yourself everyday that makes you think you are beautiful.
9. Compliment others more- make people feel good about themselves and spread positivity and happiness, it’s contagious.
10. Be greatfull of what you have and what’s working- gratitude of a perfectly functional body that you have and the fact that you can breathe effortlessly.
Most importantly; each time you look at yourself in the mirror, give yourself a smile.
